Preventing COVID-19- Some Dos and Don’ts

The entire world has taken note of the recent Wuhan virus outbreak. Wuhan, the capital city of the Hubei province of China, is the epicenter of the outbreak, and the city continues to be quarantined. The virus is highly contagious, and it has spread to other countries as well. However, outside China, the number of cases is not very high.

The COVID-19 causes mild illness, but it can be fatal for individuals with suppressed immunities or other health issues. You can keep the disease at bay by following preventive measures. Let’s discuss some Dos and Don’ts that can help you stay away from the Wuhan virus.

Dos To Keep Away The Wuhan Virus

 1)           Wash your hands frequently

Clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub (with more than 60 percent alcohol), or wash them with soap and water at frequent intervals. Especially before meals, or after using public restrooms. This will kill viruses that your hands might have picked from dirty knobs or other places that people frequently touch.

2)           Maintain distance from sick individuals

Maintain at least 1 meter (3 feet) distance from a person who is coughing or sneezing. That’s because when someone coughs or sneezes, they spray small liquid droplets from their nose or mouth which may contain a virus. If they are infected with COVID-19, it can get easily transmitted to you.

3)           Follow good respiratory hygiene

You and your family should observe good respiratory hygiene. Whenever you cough or sneeze, cover your mouth with your bent elbow or tissue. Then dispose of the used tissue immediately. This will ensure that you do not spread around viruses that might be present in your saliva.

4)           Seek medical care immediately if you have fever and cough

Early detection of COVID-19 can help you recover quickly, and prevent the infection from spreading to your family members. Check with a registered medical practitioner if you have symptoms like cold, cough, respiratory troubles, etc. Stay at home, and do not visit public places.

Don’ts To Keep The Wuhan Virus Away

 1)           Don’t touch your eyes, nose, and mouth unnecessarily

Your hands touch many surfaces from where they can pick up viruses. Once contaminated, hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose or mouth, and enter your body. Teach your kids to not rub eyes, or put their hands in their mouth or nose.

2)           Don’t go near-live animals

COVID-19 is believed to have an animal origin, experts are certain that it came from bats, and infected humans via an intermediate species. The Wuhan outbreak has also been linked to the Wuhan seafood market, where wild animals are sold for meat. Avoid visiting such places to prevent catching the infection.

3)           Do not eat raw meat

Eat properly cooked meat to avoid the chances of any kind of infection. Keep raw meat away from cooked meat to avoid cross-contamination. Do not eat the meat of any exotic or wild animal.

The Singapore Food Agency has stated that there are no imports of livestock or raw meat from China. But it is advisable to practice good food hygiene and food safety practices during this time.

4)           Do not go to crowded places

We would suggest you to avoid crowded places for some time. Also, please do not travel to places where there has been an outbreak of the Wuhan Virus.

By giving a little time and attention to these Dos and Don’ts mentioned above, you can protect yourself and your loved ones from catching the COVID-19.
